PIPPIN Ben Vereen, William Katt, Leslie Denniston, Chita Ravera, Martha Raye.
Musical created by Bob Fosse of "All that Jazz" fame. Filmed on stage before a live audience. A performing troupe enacts the life and times of Prince Pippin, son of Charlemagne. (Stellar  Exclusive!)  Pippen is distinguished as the first Broadway musical to be videotaped for television broadcast. Ben Vereen turns in one of the greatest performances of his life. Here's a Broadway musical about a young man who sets out to discover true meaning in his life, dabbling in war, sex, and politics before finding love. That may sound conventional, but it isn't. The title character of Pippin is the son of Charlemagne, the 9th-century emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, and when Bob Fosse directed the original Broadway production in 1972, he transformed what had begun as a fairly innocent college project for composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz into a burlesque filled with broad comedy, bawdy characters, and magical but dark situations. Pippin (played by William Katt, of TV's The Greatest American Hero) embarks on his quest, all the way coaxed and goaded by a narrator figure known as the Leading Player (Ben Vereen) while his stepmother (Chita Rivera) schemes. Filmed live on stage in Australia. 1981 Color 112 minutes.

It seems he wants them all.

Authentic minstrel routines are performed onstage. John Raitt appears as himself, 1944 B&W. 69 min.

NO NO NANETTE Victor Mature, Anna Neagle, Zazu Pitts, Roland Young. A highly enjoyable musical, though released in 1940, contains all the conventions of the thirties comedies: A perky heroine who meddles in everyone's lives with sociopathic "pranks", and exotic gold-diggers whom she's combating; a ludicrously lecherous uncle, and a knowing, wisecracking wife; anti-cultural attitudes, yet hilariously pseudo-cultural touches in numbers; sublimely silly plot complications and coincidences with surrealistically unlikely outcomes; and an environment where airplanes have sleeping-bunks, all women own enormous wardrobes of real fabric and real fur, and homes and hotels are all done in snowy white. Plus it's great fun to see some of Hollywood's then-abundant great "character" players working together, and to catch later stars before their images were forever fixed. Just imagine the innocence and aspirations of a world where an airline stewardess is clothed in an expensive military-style uniform, all of white! 1940 B&W 96 minutes
